Christmas Concerts with the RTV Slovenia Symphony Orchestra

On 19th and 20th December 2004 the Zbor sv. Nikolaja performed at the RTV Slovenia Symphony Orchestra Christmas Concert in Gallus' Hall in Cankarjev Dom, Ljubljana and in Slovenian National Theatre, Maribor. The concert has been a tradition for many years but this year the Zbor sv. Nikolaja has been invited for the first time. The concert repertory consisted of pieces composed by John Rutter, translated into Slovenian language by professor Irma Močnik. The Nikolajev otroški zbor (Saint Nicholas Children's Choir), bass-baritonist Marcos Fink and the Chamber choir RTV Slovenia were also participating as guests along with the conductor David de Villiers.

The unique music together with the profound inner message filled everyone's mind and soul. It brought a bright light into people's hearts and discovered a joint thought among different views of different people. The Messiah was born and the angel song honoures and salutes him.

"Doing the christmas carols of John Rutter with the symphony orchestra was a gift to us which we gladly accepted. The concert preparations were thourough and precise but the on-stage feeling were therefore much more delightful. To sing on the stage of a sold-out Gallus' Hall in front of over 1500 people is an unforgetable sensation filled with joy and happiness. The magical songs of peace, love and the birth of the Saviour spoke out and the audience carefully listened. The reactions of the people after the both concerts were full of excitement, joy and warm feelings.
A special attention was given to the Nikolajev otroški zbor, the youngest member being only 5 years old! They dazzled everybody's eyes with their angel-like appearance and the beautiful clarity of their voices.
This concert has been a big new experience for us and it was an honour to meet and work with such a great conductor who enchanted us all with his relaxed, professional and extremely positive approach to music."

RTV Slovenia Symphony Orchestra was established in 1955. The orchestra had soon achieved a considerable success by touring extensively throughout Slovenia and abroad, and between the years 1984-85 it performed to great critical acclaim in the USA. The main activity of the orchestra is concert recording. It performs a vast and diverse repertoire, ranging from baroque to modern symphonic music, from operatic music to oratorios and cantatas, from incidental music to film soundtracks, always giving a special emphasis to the creativity of Slovenian composers. The orchestra has been awarded many top prizes for the best performances of new Slovenian compositions. The majority of its recordings can be heard regularly at all radio and TV programmes in Slovenia, while its domestic and foreign discography is quite extensive (more than 150 CDs). The orchestra regularly tours throughout Europe. Since September 2003, its chief conductor has been David de Villiers.

David De Villiers, conductor of the RTV Slovenia Symphony Orchestra: It has been a great pleasure of working with such an excellent choir - the Zbor sv. Nikolaja from Litija. My commendations to the choir conductor for her high-quality work. You sound beautifully and your voice leveling is incredible. Your creative energy can be felt in every moment. The children choir is wonderful too. A man's heart jumps with joy when they sing.
