Eno drevce - Slovenian folk songs CD

Zbor sv. Nikolaja Choir, since its foundation conducted by Helena Fojkar Zupančič, published the third album entitled “Eno drevce” in October 2011. This project of Slovenian folk songs is a product of many years’ hard work, enriched with the tradition of our ancestors. We are thus, from which we grow. Many generations of Slovenians strived to preserve the Slovenian culture and language. Their determination, desire and yearning for freedom was most carefully enriched with Slovene songs that they passed from generation to generation like a precious heirloom that needs to be preserved.

A renowned Slovenian composer and a member of the choir, Črt Sojar Voglar, chose the following words to describe the diversity of Slovenian folk songs heard on the album: “Absorbing the rhythmically enthusiastic and cheery melodies of a province, and individual only has to move a few kilometres away to delight in more melancholic, dulcet melodies. Another few kilometres further and we get surprised and awed by the fine, sharp sonority of voices. Moving onward to another province, more or less harmonious polyphony awaits us. All these facts point that among numerous Slovene provinces, each of them is quite unique in its musical narration.” Furthermore he says: “An acute listener will be able to observe how the sound of the choir transforms throughout the recording, which presents ever new challenges.”

The CD consists of adaptations of Slovenian folk songs arranged by noted Slovenian composers. The title song of the album, “Eno drevce mi je zraslo”, is the one that made the greatest impact on the singers of the Saint Nicholas Choir. It was arranged and dedicated to the choir by one of the most renowned Slovenian composers of the younger generation - Ambrož Čopi.

The CD booklet includes a foreword written by Črt Sojar Voglar as well as a colourful description of the choir and the conductor expertly created by a Slovenian musicologist, pedagogue and conductor Tomaž Faganel . The booklet also includes the lyrics of the songs in both Slovene and English.

The CD was recorded between 2008 and 2010 in the church of St. John the Baptist in Preska pri Medvodah.

The CD can be bought here or at the choir’s concerts.
